Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 200 Fly Final

National Teamers Mary Descenza and Kim Vandenberg battled for the women’s 200 Fly gold. Mary, the newly minted American Record Holder in the SCM version of the event, hit the wall first with a new meet record time of 2:07.77. Kim finished with a 2:08.19. Ava Ohlgren claimed third in 2:09.

Santa Clara 2008 - 800 Free Relays

Team Australia took down the women’s 800 Free Relay meet record with a 8:05.08 group effort. Japan challenged for the title, claiming the silver in 8:06.61. Finishing a distant 3rd was the Athens Bulldogs ‘A’ relay (8:17.01).

The Japanese men edged the 2006 Aussie meet record with a combined 7:20.57 performance. The Athens Bulldogs improved on the women’s finish with a 2nd place showing in 7:33.55. Mexico’s ‘A’ squad completed the podium with a 7:35.89 race.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 50 Free Final

South Africa’s Roland Schoeman took the 50 free sprint title with a meet record effort of 22.29. Matt Grevers made it to the wall next in 22.58. Closing out the podium was Ryk Neethling, another member of South Africa’s Olympic Team, with a 22.68 swim.

Reigning World Champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner hit 5th in 22.75, while Bryan Lundquist, fresh from the Short Course World Champs took 6th in 22.79.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 100 Back Final

She went for her own 100 Back World Record, but in the end, Natalie Coughlin will settle for a meet record from the Championship final. Natalie’s 59.44 was comfortably ahead of the rest of the field as runner-up Margaret Hoelzer hit in 1:01.13. Third place went to Lauren Rogers after a 1:01.87 swim.

Elizabeth Beisel clocked a 1:02.06 to take 4th, followed by Mary Descenza (1:02.39) and Brooke Bishop (1:02.60).

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 200 Back Final

Aaron Peirsol and Michael Phelps put on a show in a Ryan Lochte-free men’s 200 Back final. The two were seperated by just .03 at the wall with Aaron taking the win in a meet record 1:55.81 to Michael’s 1:55.84. Club Wolverine occupied spots 2-4 as Chris DeJong placed 3rd in 1:57.61 followed by teammate Tyler Clary’s 2:00.51.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 200 Free Finals

Australia’s Bronte Barratt, after already having won the 400 Free yesterday, added to her tally with in a 1:57.18 meet record victory in the 200 free final. Club Wolverine’s Allison Schmitt picked up the silver with a personal best time of 1:58.23, while Cal’s Dana Vollmer touched 3rd in 1:59.26.

After qualifying first, Natalie Coughlin opted not to contest the final. She is likely concentrating on the 100 Back final and challenging her own World Record.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 400 Free Final

After coming close at last month’s Ohio State Grand Prix, Peter Vanderkaay successfully erased Klete Keller’s 400 Free American Record with a dominating career best 3:43.82 swim. Peter also locked up the US Open and a new meet record. Teammate Erik Vendt posted a 3:46.56 to finish second while Longhorn Michael Klueh turned in a 3:48.79 race for the bronze.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 100 Breast Final

Tara Kirk bested the women’s 100 Breast field, making it to the wall in 1:08.36. Kasey Carlson grabbed the silver with a 1:09.09 swim. Genevieve Patterson (1:09.67) and Olympian Megan Jendrick (1:09.78) battled for the final spot on the podium, with Patterson getting the nod by .09. Amanda Beard’s 1:10.12 performance earned her 5th place.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 100 Fly Final

Michael Phelps bettered his 2006 meet record with a blistering 51.61 100 Fly effort. Teammate Davis Tarwater made it to the wall in 53.04 for the silver. Rounding out the podium was Australia’s Garth Kates after a 53.43 swim. Tyler McGill finished just off the podium with a 4th place 53.47.

In the ‘B’ final, Matt Grevers snagged 3rd, hitting in 53.57.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 400 IM Final

Bluefish’s Elizabeth Beisel set the night’s first meet record with a 4:36.75 swim in the women’s 400 IM final. Auburn’s Ava Ohlgren touched second in 4:39.69, followed by Stanford’s Julia Smit in 4:39.76. All 3 hit the wall under the old meet record set by Katie Hoff in 2004.
