Santa Clara 2008 - 400 Free Relays

The Aussie women’s 400 Free Relay squad of Cate Campbell, Ellen Fullerton, Bronte Barratt, and Amelia Evatt-Davey combined for a 3:43.08 meet record win. The Athens Bulldogs ‘A’ team registered a time of 3:44.21 for second. Team Japan claimed the #3 spot in 3:44.45.

On the men’s side, there was also a meet record. The South African foursome of Lyndon Ferns, Roland Schoeman, Gideon Louw, and Ryk Neethling smashed the 2006 meet record with a 3:15.58 finish. The Aussie men took second in 3:21.80, with Great Britain rounding out the top 3 in 3:24.01.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 200 Fly Final

Club Wolverine’s Davis Tarwater erased teammate Michael Phelps’ meet record in the 200 Fly with a personal best effort of 1:55.93. Ian Gherghel picked up second place with a 1:58.25, while NCAA champion Gil Stovall snared 3rd with a 1:58.71 swim.

Alex Vanderkaay claimed 4th in 1:59.09, just ahead of Mark Dylla’s 1:59.10.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 100 Fly Final

In her second event of the evening, Dana Vollmer contested the women’s 100 Fly and made it to the wall first in 58.52. Athens Bulldog mary Descenza clocked a 59.21 for second place, while Stanford’s Elaine Breeden (59.66) touched out Ava Ohlgren’s 59.67 at the wall for the final spot on the podium.

In the ‘C’ final, also her second final of the night, Tara Kirk finished 9th with a 1:01.97 swim.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 400 IM Final

World Record Holder Michael Phelps bested the men’s 400 IM field with a 4:13.47 swim. Athens Bulldogs’ Robert Margalis turned in a 4:15.05 performance to take 2nd. Club Wolverine teammates Tyler Clary (4:22.12) and Dane Grenda (4:25.03) finished 3-4.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 400 Free Final

The Aussie duo of Bronte Barratt and Kylier Palmer went 1-2 in the women’s 400 Free final posting times of 4:04.57 and 4:05.98, respectively. Kate Ziegler completed the the top 3 with a 4:07.11 effort. Again, all 3 podium finishers put up times that were faster than the previous meet record mark.

Club Wolverine’s Kaitlin Sandeno secured 7th place with a 4:14.74 swim.

Santa Clara 2008 - Men’s 200 Free Final

Peter Vanderkaay bettered the men’s 200 Free meet record with a 1st place finish of 1:46.24. Dom Meichtry claimed second with a 1:47.89 performance while Michael Kleuh (1:48.06) snagged 3rd place from Japan’s Yoshihro Okumura (1:48.10). Club Wolverine’s Erik Vendt swam a 1:50.57 for an 8th overall.

The ‘B’ final featured a close race between Chris DeJong and Aaron Peirsol, with Chris’ 1:50.04 just edging Aaron (1:50.20) at the wall.

Matt Grevers posted a 1:52.21 swim for 5th in the ‘C’ final.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 200 Breast Finals

Japan’s Izumi Kato took the top spot in the women’s 200 Breast final with a 2:27.69 swim. Posting her fastest time since returning to competition, Amand Beard finished 2nd in 2:28.15. The final spot on the podium went to Jessica Schmitt in 2:28.41.

National Team staples Megan Jendrick (2:31.70) and Tara Kirk (2:32.67) finished 7-8.

All times were significantly off of Leisel Jones’ meet record performance of 2:24.46 set at last year’s meet.

Brendan Hansen bettered his own 100 Breast meet record from last year’s competition with a 1:00.01 finish. Damir Dugonjic hit second in 1:01.67, followed by Ryo Tateishi’s 1:01.68.

Santa Clara 2008 - Women’s 100 Free Final

Aussie sprint star Cate Campbell touched out Swim Star Natalie Coughlin in the finals of the women’s 100 Free. Campbell registered a swift 53.30 finish, ahead of Natalie’s 53.39, to post a new meet record. Although, she did not take 1st, Natalie broke her own American Record from last year’s World Championships. Rounding out the Top 3 was Lacey Nymeyer in 54.92.

Ryan Lochte Out Of Santa Clara International

For those of you looking forward to some battles between Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, and Aaron Peirsol, I regret to inform you that Ryan will not be racing this weekend.

He has informed us that he is currently injured, with a sprain, and is not in Santa Clara this weekend to compete.
