Katie Hoff made a run for her own 400 Free American Record and finished slightly off pace in 4:02.32, a new Olympic Trials meet record. Kate Ziegler made her 1st Olympic team by placing second in a 4:03.92, out touching Club Wolverine’s Allison Schmitt (4:05.05). Caroline Burckle led at one point during the race and finished 4th after a 4:05.09 race.

Randall Bal posted the world’s fastest 100 Back time this year with his Olympic Trials meet record of 53.09. World Record holder Aaron Peirsol also secured his spot with a 53.26 win in the 1st semifinal, ahead of Matt Grevers‘ 53.32. Ryan Lochte hit in 53.37 with Nick Thoman and David Plummer posting identical 53.83 efforts. Ben Hesen (53.87) and Patrick Schirk (54.16) will occupy lanes 1 and 8 in tomorrow’s final.

Rebecca Soni earned the top seed for tomorrow’s 100 breast final with 1:06.87 swim tonight. In the 2nd semi, Megan Jendrick brought it home better than anyone else to win in 1:07.17. Tara Kirk qualified 3rd in 1:07.19 with Annie Chandler also moving on after a 1:08.06. Jessica Hardy went out fast and finished 3rd in her heat (5th overall) in 1:08.18. Elizabeth Tinnon qualified 6th in 1:08.43, followed by Amanda Beard in 1:08.73.

World Record Holder Brendan Hansen successfully made his 2nd Olympic Team with a 59.93 win in the men’s 100 Breast. Joining him in Beijing will be Mark Gangloff after a 1:00.72 effort.
The next finishers were Longhorn’s Scott Spann (1:00.59) and Eric Shanteau (1:00.72).

Tennessee’s Christine Magnuson punched her ticket to Beijing with a come-from-behind win in the 100 Fly. She had a strong back half and surged to a 58.11 win. Stanford’s Elaine Breeden (58.21) touched out National Team veteran Rachel Komisarz (58.36) to lock up the second Olympic team spot.

If you wanted to advance to the final for the men’s 200 freestyle you need to break 1:47 in order to do so.
Ryan Lochte led all semifinalists with the world’s fastest time this year: 1:45.61. Michael Phelps won the second semifinal in 1:45.64, just ahead of teammate Peter Vanderkaay’s 1:46.08. Dave Walters also qualified for finals with a 1:46.65 finish.
Ricky Berens (1:46.77), Klete Keller (1:46.78), Danny Beal (1:46.89), and Erik Vendt (1:46.94) complete the finalist list.
Additionaally, Chris DeJong posted a 1:47.94 and will serve as the 2nd alternate.

After dazzling the crowd this morning with separate World Record swims, Hayley McGregory and Natalie Coughlin backed off a little to lead all qualifiers into tomorrow’s finals. Hayley won her semi in 59.48 and Natalie hers in 59.71.
200 Back specialist Margaret Hoelzer qualified 3rd in 59.79, followed by Lauren Rogers’ 1:00.76. Elizabeth Beisel (1:00.87), Presley Bard (1:00.92), Katie Riefenstahl (1:01.12) and Leila Vaziri (1:01.40) round out the championship field for tomorrow.

Katie Hoff registered a new Olympic Trials meet record in the 400 free with a blistering 4:05.61 effort. Swimming in the final heat, Club Wolverine’s Allison Schmitt jumped out to an early lead, but Katie challenged late and won the heat. Allison shaved 5 seconds off her best time with a 4:05.72.
In the previous heat, Kate Ziegler posted a swift time of her own in 4:06.04. The next finals-qualifying time belonged to Caroline Burckle in 4:06.74.
The remainder of the finals field will include Alyssa Anderson, Kelsey Ditto, Maggie Bird, and Jessica Rodriquez.

Randall Bal bested all qualifiers in the men’s 100 Back morning prelims with a time of 53.28 that challenged the World Record of Aaron Peirsol set last year. The second qualifier for semifinals was Matt Grevers in 53.69, who just touched out Ryan Lochte (53.96) in the 10th heat.
In the final heat, Aaron Peirsol was beaten to the wall by David Plummer, who posted a 54 flat. Aaron touched in 54.14.
Others continuing their quest for an Olympic team spot tonight include Ben Hesen (53.88), Pat Schirk (54.52), and David Cromwell (54.57).

Rebecca Soni posted a swift 1:06.90 in the 12th heat to qualify for semis. Amanda Beard also raced in this heat and recorded a 1:09.29 to move on as well.
Tara Kirk won the next heat in 1:07.86. Meanwhile, Jessica Hardy’s 1:06.85 was the top time as she raced Megan Jendrick (1:07.06) to the wall. Jessica’s time was an Olympic Trials meet record record.
Tara, Megan, and Jessica also qualify for semifinals.
