Peter Vanderkaay posted a 1:47.04 200 Free swim to qualify for tonight’s semis. He swam in the 10th heat, while the rest of the Swim Stars were crowded into the final heat.
Michael Phelps‘ 1:46.63 led the swimmers into the wall, followed closely by Ryan Lochte’s 1:46.83 and Chris DeJong’s 1:47.96. Erik Vendt finished in 1:48.23 and will also advance to this evening’s semifinals.

Felicia Lee swam her 100 Back prelim in the 11th heat where she turned in a 1:04.34 performance, but what disqualified for one of her turns. In the very next heat, Megan Romano touched in 1:03.60.
In the 15th heat Hayley McGregory shattered Natalie Coughlin’s World Record with a 59.15 effort. Natalie in the following heat and broke it right back! Her time was 59.03.
Naturally, McGregory and Coughlin lead all qualifiers into tonight’s semifinals. Margaret Hoelzer (1:00.86), Lauren Rogers (1:01.01), Elizabeth Beisel (1:01.08), and Liz Pelton (1:01.34) make up the top times in the semifinal field.

Brendan Hansen made a case to be the 3rd World Record breaking performance of the night with a 59.24 swim in the second 100 Breast semifinal heat. He fell just short of the global mark but advances to tomorrow’s final as the top seed.
Mark Gangloff posted the second fastest semifinal time of 1:00.17 to earn the 2nd seed. Eric Shanteau earned 3rd overall in 1:00.63, followed by Scott Spann’s 1:00.94.

Another World Record fell as Katie Hoff earned back the World Record in the 400 IM with a tremendous 4:31.12 swim. Elizabeth Beisel finished a close second (4:32.87) that was under Hoff’s old American Record as well. Stanford’s Julia Smit wrapped up 3rd place with a 4:35.73 effort.

Christine Magnuson had another stellar performance in the women’s 100 Fly, touching the wall in 57.50. Elaine Breeden was ther second qualified for tomorrow’s final with a 58.04. National Teamer Rachel Komisarz advanced to finals, as well, with a 58.31 swim.
Also moving on to tomorrow’s final are Dana Vollmer (58.55), Mary Descenza (58.86), Brooke Bishop (58.98), Whitney Myers (59.13), and Kim Vandenberg (59.34).

The men’s 400 Free final brought even more excitement to the Qwest Center as Larsen Jensen won with a new American Record of 3:43.53. The previous American Record holder, Peter Vanderkaay, raced Jensen to the finish, but was out touched as he hit in 3:43.73. His time was also faster than his previous record. Touching third was Erik Vendt in 4:43.92, who challenged the 2 leaders with a late charge in the final 50 meters.

The first 2 swimmers punching their tickets to Beijing are Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte as they finished 1-2 in the 400 IM final. Phelps bettered his own global standard with a 4:05.25 effort, Lochte’s 4:06.08 was also the old standard.
The atmosphere in the Qwest Center was electric as the two stars were cheered to the wall. What a way to start the night!

As expected, Brendan Hansen’s blazing 59.84 earned him the top seed for tonight’s semifinals. Mark Gangloff touched 2nd overall with a 1:00.10 swim. Hansen’s teammate Eric Shanteau secured the 3rd seed after a
1:00.91 effort. Scott Usher’s 1:00.97 and Scott Spann’s 1:00.98 round out the top 5 qualifiers.

American Record holder Katie Hoff and Elizabeth Beisel put together 2 very impressive performances in the 400 IM. In back-to-back heats, both improved upon the Olympic Trials Meet Record. Beisel’s time, which was
under world record pace at several points in her race, was 4:35.75. Then, in the very next heat Hoff recorded an even more swift time of 4:34.59. Julia Smit’s 4:37.19 and Caitlin Leverenz’s 4:38.96 comprise the sub-4:40
club. Joining those 4 this evening for the final are Ariana Kukors (4:40.36), Alicia Aemisegger (4:42.92), and Kathleen Hersey (4:43.20).

Erik Vendt turned in a 3:48.25 swim in his 400 Free prelim. That time ended up being the 3rd fastest of the morning. In the final heat, Peter Vanderkaay and Larsen Jensen raced to the wall to lock up the top 2
seeds with times of 3:48.06 and 3:48.28 respectively. Also advancing to tonight’s timed finals — in order — are Chad La Tourette, Klete Keller, Tobias Work, Michael Klueh, and Matt Patton.
