Santa Clara 2009 – Women’s 50 Free Final
Madison Kennedy took the 50 Free sprint title, making it to the wall 25.29. Amanda Weir scored the silver with a 25.33 swim. Joining Kennedy and Weir on the podium is Julia Smit after a 25.43 race.

Australia’s Brenton Rickard completed his sweep of the breaststroke events this weekend, winning the men’s 200 Breast with a swift 2:10.37, a new meet record. Scott Dickens took second with a 2:14.52 swim with John Criste (2:15.35) narrowly stealing the bronze from George Klein (2:15.54).
Mary DeScenza, the Grand Prix points winner, swam her specialty event, the 200 fly and won gold in 2:08.78. Longhorn’s Kathleen Hersey touched second in 2:10.29, with Alyssa Anderson (2:10.36) claiming the final spot on the podium.
Matt Grevers leads all qualifiers into the final of the men’s 100 Back with a 55.15 prelim time. David Russell’s 55.43 earned him the 2nd seed while Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte both put up 55.46 swims to advance to finals as the join #3 seed. Should be the most intriguing race of the night.
Aussie Meagan Nay continued her solid run at the Santa Clara International with a field leading 200 Back prelim time of 2:11.13 to earn the #1 seed. Kirsty Coventry had the next qualifying time, a 2:11.96, before Elizabeth Beisel’s 2:13.72 and Katie Riefenstahl’s 2:14.09.
Dagny Knutson made it to the wall in 2:15.01 to qualify first for the women’s 200 IM final. New Zealand’s Natalie Wiegersma touched in 2:15.93 to qualify next, with Julia Smit (2:16.37), Stephanie Rice (2:17.05), Ariana Kukors (2:17.06) also moving on to push for the title this evening.
Tuscon Ford’s Lara Jackson and Stanford’s Julia Smit clocked identical times of 25.76 during the women’s 50 Free prelims, which were the top times of the morning. Amanda Weir’s 25.89 was the next qualifying time, followed by Jackie Vavrek’s 26.09 and Madison Kennedy’s 26.10.
Brian Johns hit the wall in 2:03.49 to take the top seed for tonight’s finals of the men’s 200 IM. He will be challenged by Australia’s Stephen Parkes (2:04.07) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (2:04.30), as well as Jack Brown, who finished in 2:04.39 and Martti Aljand, who posted a 2:05.14.
Ryan Lochte scratched the event.
The top qualifying times of the men’s 100 Free prelims were extremely close with Canada’s Brent Hayden edging the field with a 49.39 performance. Nathan Adrian’s 49.85 was the next qualifier and only the second sub-50 time. Ryan Lochte clocked a 50.00 for the 3rd seed, slightly ahead of Adam Brown’s 50.01. Michael Phelps (50.07) and Matt Grevers (50.09) will also race in the championship final tonight.
