Olympic Trials - Women’s 50 Free Semifinals

Jessica Hardy won the first women’s 50 Free semi in 24.48. In doing so, she broke the American Record set by Lara Jackson this morning. Lacey Nymeyer finished with a 2nd place 25.06. Kara Denby (25.15) and Christine Magnuson (25.37) went 3-4.

In the very next heat, Dara Torres erased Hardy’s American Record with a 24.38 performance. Kara Lynn Joyce notched 2nd in 24.70 and Former American Record Holder Lara Jackson 24.94, ahead of Brooke Bishop’s 25.13.

These are all of the qualifiers for tomorrow’s 50 Free final.

Olympic Trials - Men’s 50 Free Final

Garrett Weber-Gale set a new American Record in the men’s 50 Free with a blistering 21.47 output. Ben Wildman-Tobriner clocked a 21.65 for an Olympic berth of his own.

Cullen Jones, who is already Beijing bound tok 3rd in 21.81. Gary Hall Jr made it in at 21.91, just ahead of Jason Lezak’s 21.98. Nathan Adrian posted a time of 22.07 while Nick Brunelli and Bryan Lundquist tied with a 22.13.

Olympic Trials - Women’s 800 Free Final

Katie Hoff and Kate Ziegler were neck and neck for the 1st half of the women’s 800 Free final, before she pulled away and stormed to the wall with a 8:20.81 effort. Kate Ziegler wrapped up the other Beijing bound spot with a 8:25.38 finish.

Chloe Sutton’s 8:31.23 and Katie Carroll’s 8:31.47 were good for 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Caroline Burckle grabbed 5th in 8:32.26 and Kelsey Ditto 6th in 8:39.35. Laurabeth Guenthner posted a 8:41.25 for 7th, while Leah Gingrich closed out the field with a 8:42.10.

Olympic Trials - Men’s 100 Fly Final

Michael Phelps used a strong wall to catapult himself to the lead and the men’s 100 Fly win in 50.89. World Record Holder Ian Crocker will join Phelps in Beijing after his 51.62 finish.

Gil Stovall hit in 52.08 for 3rd, Tyler McGill touched in 52.31, and Chris Brady 52.66. Bobby Bollier clocked a 5th place 52.69, Peter Verhoef was 7th in 52.72 and Davis Tarwater rounded out the finalists with a 52.83.

Olympic Trials - Women’s 200 Back Final

The women’s 200 Back World Record fell as Margaret Hoelzer and Elizabeth Beisel earned berths for the women’s Olympic roster.

Hoelzer’s 2:06.09 established a new global mark, followed by Elizabeth Beisel’s 2:06.92.

Hayley McGregory was 3rd 2:07.69 and Mary Descenza 4th in 2:10.00.

The remaining finishers were Kristen Heiss (2:10.18), Katie Riefenstahl (2:10.26), Teresa Crippen (2:12.16), andMorgan Scroggy (2:12.89).

Olympic Trials - Men’s 1500 Free Prelims

Peter Vanderkaay was the first swimmer to hit the wall in the 1st seeded heat of the men’s 1500 Free prelims. He looked extremely smooth, jumping out to an immediate lead and finished in 15:06.24. Kyle Young hit second in 15:20.99.

Larsen Jensen’s 15:11.99 in the second seeded heat was more than enough to take first. Tom Koucheravy followed with 15:16.68 for second.

Erik Vendt swam a very fast but controlled 1500 Free prelim and earned the top seed for tomorrow’s final with a 14:50.24; a new Olympic Trials meet record. Chad La Tourette 15:02.78.

Robert Margalis’ 15:21.05 and Joe Kinderwater’s 15:22.45 also earned them a shot at an Olympic berth in tomorrow’s 1500 Free final.

Olympic Trials - Women’s 50 Free Prelims

Jessica Hardy raced in the 1st seeded heat and put up a solid 24.63 in the women’s 50 Free, a new Olympic Trials meet record. Sara Smith was second in 25.49.

Lacey Nymeyer’s 25.01, was just ahead of Kara Lynn Joyce’s 25.04 in the second seeded heat. 25.31 was the time Kara Denby put up for 3rd.

Lara Jackson raced Dara Torres (24.72) in the final heat and broke Torres’ American Record with a blistering 24.5 finish. She was just off the World Record and effectively erased Hardy’s Olympic Trials Meet Record.

Next up are the semifinals, which wil take place tonight.

Also moving on to that round, as part of the top 8 seeds, are Brooke Bishop (25.40) and Christine Magnuson (25.41).

Meanwhile, Megan Romano posted a 26.26 effort in the 4th heat.

Olympic Trials - Men’s 100 Fly Semifinals

The first semifinal heat of the men’s 100 Fly featured a top 3 Michigan sweep as Michael Phelps (51.10), Chris Brady (52.35), and Davis Tarwater (52.59) went 1-2-3. Peter Verhoef touched in 52.84 for 4th place.

Ian Crocker won the 2nd semi in 51.52, followed by Gil Stovall’s 51.86 and Tyler McGill’s 52.20 effort. Bobby Bollier hit in 52.58 and will also move on to finals with the rest of the swimmers already mentioned.

Additinally, Matt Grevers posted a 53.15 in the 1st semifinal to finish 5th in that heat.

Olympic Trials - Women’s 100 Free Final

Dara Torres made her 5th Olympic Team with a 53.78 win in the women’s 100 Freestyle. Natalie Coughlin qualified for another event in Beijing with a 53.83 finish.

Lacey Nymeyer’s 54.02 and Jessica Hardy’s 54.62 earned them berths on the 400 Free Relay.

Emily Silver (54.91) and Julia Smit (54.99) earned consideration for the relay as alternates with their 5th and 6th place finishes.

Olympic Trials - Men’s 200 IM Finals

The men’s 200 IM final featured another Michale Phelps/Ryan Lochte duel and Phelps improved his own global standard to 1:54.48 with the win. Ryan Lochte touched a close second in 1:55.22.

Eric Shanteau took 3rd with a 1:58.15 finish while Tim Liebhold (2:00.06) and Alex Vanderkaay (2:00.10) placed 4th and 5th respectively.

Robert Margalis and Dan Madwed both hit in 2:00.77 for a 6th place tie. T.P. Patrick completed the finals field in 2:01.52.
